We are organizing a special session on:

Research, technologies and new tools in film restoration

Film restoration is a complex and multidisciplinary field without a commonly shared technical approach or set of instruments to perform the intervention and assess the results. While the historical/philological research shares a well-established research methodology, the digitisation, digital restoration and conservation of digital media presents many unsolved problems. Nowadays, a multitude of hardwired film scanners and video editing tools speedily perform operations of digitisation, digital restoration and conservation, and the dexterity in the use of a specific scanner and software of choice empowers nearly anybody to be a digital restoration operator, thus leading to little interest in scientific research and in the invention and design of new technologies and tools. In order to share discussions and foster innovative research developments and directions in the field, we are calling for papers that address this problem.

All the colors of cinema

Since the early years of cinema, color has been a powerful means for expressing mood, creating meaning, reflecting social and cultural customs, or setting the aesthetic tone of a film. Oftentimes, color in film is so important as to become a character in and of itself. In this special session, we will explore the multifaceted role that color has played in cinema since its inception, in order to map out new trends and theories on the subject with an interdisciplinary approach. We welcome submissions from different perspectives and backgrounds, investigating the full spectrum of the relationship between color and cinema.
